There are two primary types of chillers: air-cooled and water-cooled. 

A air-cooled chiller expels the heat it absorbs from the building or process directly into the outdoor air, utilizing refrigerant-to-air coils and fans that direct outdoor air over these coils. 

A water-cooled chiller transfers the absorbed heat to a secondary fluid loop, which can then dissipate the heat through an auxiliary device, such as a cooling tower (more commonly used) or a dry cooler (less frequently employed).
